Myrna García

Myrna García is an ethnic studies scholar with over 20 years of experience in teaching, mentoring, and research. She holds a Ph.D. in ethnic studies from UC San Diego and an M.Ed. from Fordham University. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of Instruction in Latinx Studies at Northwestern University, where she teaches courses on Latinx hi/stories, social movements, and immigration. Her research focuses on the activism of the Chicago chapter of the Center for Autonomous Social Action (CASA) during the Chicano Movement. Dr. García is dedicated to empowering students to see themselves as producers of knowledge and has been recognized with NU’s Daniel Linzer Award for Faculty Excellence in Diversity and Equity. She also serves on the Aquí en Chicago advisory committee at the Chicago History Museum, promoting the preservation of Chicago’s Latinx history.
She previously worked as a fourth-grade teacher in NYC public schools and is committed to education, particularly for marginalized communities. Dr. García lives in Evanston with her child, who attends Dr. Bessie Rhodes School of Global Studies. They enjoy walks by the lake, reading, and engaging with the arts.
